Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
Q: Why should I play soccer?
A: Soccer, known in most of the rest of the world as 'football", has been called "the beautiful game." It is expanding rapidly in the United States, and the American women's national team are current World Champions. It was the only American sport to produce gains in attendance this past year while the other major sports showed falling numbers If you are looking for a new, lifelong passion soccer is the sport for you! Not only is it incredibly fun to play and support, it also gives you immediate benefits. Soccer will help you stay healthy and in shape. It will help you meet new people and through your shared experience develop new and lasting relationships. When you join North's girls soccer team you are joining a group that cares about each other far beyond the confines of a soccer field.
Q: Who is on the team?
A: We have players from every grade at high school, drawn from middle-schools throughout Monroe County. High school soccer players are have differing ages, abilities, and experience, meaning it's never too early or too late to join. Some players have been playing all their life while others are playing for the first time. Selection onto the varsity of junior varsity (JV) rosters matches you with girls of similar skill as in order to ensure you have fun and can develop as a player.
Q: How much of a commitment is soccer?
A: Soccer is a fall sport and during that semester the team spends a lot of time together practicing, playing games, and enjoying bonding time together. Summer training is voluntary, currently four days a week. We typically practice every day immediately after school unless we have a game. Games are typiclly on Mondays and/or Wednesdays, with only a few weekend games. Travel is provided for players from the high school and we will travel to places like Columbus, Terre Haute, Indianapolis and Evansville, and some smaller towns along the way. But even the travel is fun as the girls often play games on the bus, help each other study, tell stories, and occasionally sing!
Q: Will I be able to balance both soccer and school?
A: YES! Our soccer team is made up of not only outstanding athletes but incredible students as well – many of which take honors courses and maintain above a 3.5 GPA! Academics are very important to us and we want to make sure you are successful. Having older players whom you can seek help from will be a huge benefit to you. Additionally, being in soccer helps you develop good time management strategies that will be helpful throughout your life.
Q: What do I need to be able to play?
A: We want you to join us as soon as you can! But before you can actually start playing you will need a few essentials. First, you will need to complete the athleticc department's paperwork including going to your doctor and get a physical done. You will need to get appropriate soccer equipment – cleats, shin guards, and knee-length socks that completely cover the shin guard.. These can be found at Dick’s Sporting Goods for a reasonable price (Cleats about $40-50; Shin guards and socks about $10-20). Everything else is provided, but we recommend you also have your own soccer ball at home too, so you can practice whenever you want. The only other thing we require is a positive attitude, willingness to challenge yourself and work hard when its needed, and a desire to have fun and improve!
Q: How much will soccer cost?
A: Nothing is free, but we try hard to make soccer affordable for everyone that wants to play. The school has every player pay a transportation fee of about $20. Additionally we ask players to pay a team fee – last season's was $145 -- to partly cover the cost of 2 pairs of game socks, 2 practice shirts, a pre-game warm up t-shirt, pre-game meals, and post-game snacks for away games. NOTE: If for some reason you cannot afford this fee, there sis financial support available to help cover it. We keep our costs down so everyone who wants to play can afford to do it (unlike travel soccer, where local costs are up to $1000 or more)
